Feeding my corn addiction I made a point to stop at the Mitchell Corn Palace.
More of an events center than a mecca of corn, the entire outside is covered in corn products. Inside are corn murals and and a stage that hosts a large bill of legendary acts. I hand it to the creator, for creating a destination in the middle of no where, quite an entrepreneurial mind.
Unfortunately I missed the big festival at the end of August, I’ll have to come back when I hope they will have better corn than what I got:
Also while I was in the town of Mitchell, a town where it’s just as common for a car as a tractor to be on the road:
I decided I would try to get my screen, screen door, trailer brakes and trailer leveling jack fixed:
I looked up a few places, and found two places in the same area:
H & W Trailer Manufacturing
1910 West Havens Street
Mitchell, SD

Independent Viking Glass
1908 West Havens Street

The next step was to go over and get the brakes looked into. I met David and we took a look. In about 20 minutes he had the problem diagnosed, basically through a process of trial and error he narrowed down that the problem must be in the wire that ran through the axel. We pulled it out, replaced it and everything worked like a charm. I had a great time working on the problem with him, I mean how often does the mechanic give you a chance to help, most would be afraid of some lawsuit or looking foolish, it’s a different place and way of doing things and I like it.
Next was the trailer jack
David made quick work of it by welding it up:
Throughout my time hanging out with David he told me about his days racing cars and flying planes, he had an old racer, crashed long ago, sitting in the back
He invited me down the street for a shake. We had a great time talking about the town and how David had some property in Oregon and his investment philosophies, apparently when the markets crashed in March he jumped in, very shrewd. Behind those overalls I could see a thinker like myself, I really enjoyed having a good chat with David and hope to visit again in the future.
The shake was excellent.
